Bicycle Thieves
Projector, Computer, Camera, Custom Software
The installation Bicycle Thieves at Gallery Expodium lasted from the 17 of May to the 26 of May 2002. The ebb and flow of bicycle traffic controlled the playback and deletion of Vittorio De Sica's timeless classic film ‘Ladri di Biciclette’. The bicycle served as a vehicle to carry the film forward (if approaching the space) or backward (if moving away) while erasing the frames after they play. A jump cut created by an initial bicycle gradually widens with each pass, until the entire film is consumed/ stolen and we are left with nothing, much like the main character of the film. The installation reacted only to passing bicycles, which affected the film in real time. The film took ten days to delete.
